Meet Pumpernickel

Pumpernickel (aka “Pomp”) is an 8 pound, very, very timid boy who is looking for a very special forever home. He is approximately 6-8 years old and was rescued from a sad circumstance--years of being trapped as breeding stock in a puppy mill. He will need a very patient adult-only household, and would benefit from a mild-mannered doggie in his new home, as he has never been apart from other dogs. Understandably he has trust issues with humans, but he is definitely progressing and will grow to become a wonderful, loving companion.

Pomp came to ARF filthy, scared and matted, but after a trip to the barber, he is now looking like a dapper, well-groomed golden poodle should.  He is also coming out of his shell more and more every day, and thanks to the companionship of the dogs and humans at his foster home, he is learning everything from how delicious dog treats are, how fun stuffed babies are to play with, and how awesome it is to be cuddled and loved by kind people (when you can catch him!).

Pomp is such a sweet boy, but even inside of his foster’s house he will run away from the humans when he is approached. He is, however, happy to hang out with the canine crew all day long resting in doggie beds or on the couch. In addition, he is slowly starting to approach the people in the house, and he’s been known to sneak a little kiss onto foster mom’s ankle when she is working at her desk or getting supper ready for the doggies. Pumpernickel also enjoys being held and just hanging out on the couch being petted-- although it always is on his terms, as he is still learning to trust his environment.

Pomp is working very hard on his potty training and currently uses puppy pads, as he is very afraid of the outdoors. It has been mostly cold and wet outside lately, but even on nicer days, Pomp does NOT do well on a leash and harness in the yard; he is downright scared and doesn’t know what to do when brought outside on the leash and harness. Maybe once the weather breaks he will adapt better, but he will still need a completely secured and fenced yard, likely only to be walked on a leash—even in the yard. It is also important to note that if Pomp were to somehow get loose (even in the fenced yard), he is considered a “runner” (“catch me if you can”…and I bet you can’t!). But, the great thing is that Pomp is completely happy being an inside little dog! He would be the perfect canine friend for someone NOT interested in walking a dog. He would also be a sweet companion for retirees or anyone working from home that wants a quiet, little pal by their side. And with the right home, Pomp promises you years of love and companionship-- once he fully learns what it’s like to be a beloved and cherished little doggie.

Pumpernickel is micro-chipped, up to date on all vaccinations, and neutered. Pumpernickel new family will be required to complete a basic obedience course of their choosing.

Pumpernickel's adoption fee is $500.  A meeting will not be scheduled until you have an approved application, so if you're interested in adopting Pumpernickel fill out an Online Application today!

Once your application has been approved, an ARF volunteer will contact you to arrange a meeting.

If a cat or dog is on our website, it is still available for adoption but might have other applicants. If you find yourself interested in one of our animals, submit a no-commitment application immediately. Submitting an application does not commit you to any animal, but does get you a head start with the adoption approval process. Due to a high volume of applications, we are often unable to respond to questions until your application has been approved in approximately 3-5 business days.

We do not schedule meetings until you have an approved application.

A.R.F.-Animal Rescue Foundation does not have a facility where applicants can visit our animals.  The majority of our dogs and cats are brought to adoption events by our volunteers. We invite everyone to come to our events, but we give priority to pre-approved applicants.

If you’re invited to meet an animal:

  • Plan to arrive on time (or early), as we cannot hold animals for any reason.
  • All human household members and dogs (if adopting another dog), must be present in order to be considered as a potential adopter.

Thank you for your interest and cooperation!
